LATEST PROJECT: BALSA SURFBOARD TABLE

Here is an interesting order for last Christmas. The guys from EDC have just been rebuilding a new office in Sydney and their new games room including pinball machines, car racing, pool table and off course a gym – required a special table. They came to Mark with this special request for a balsa surfboard table. It had to be shaped in the factory and then cut down the middle for the stringer. It was then taken on-site to cut the board around a concrete column. The board was then fixed into position and then glassed on-site. Have a look at some of the photos – the guys were stoked.

Surfboard Restoration

Last month a customer came into our shop with this old board (see top left). It was estimated to be built around the early 1960s. The customer said it was built by his wife’s Grandfather just before she was born. The family wanted to have it restored for her. Have a look at what Mark did with the board (before and after shots). The fin was a plywood fin and it had 2 holes drilled in it to take a leg rope (or just a rope and a handkerchief).

Mark has specialised in restoring all types of timber boards.

In case you have an old board in your garage or attic and want to have it restored - simply call Mark on 0412376464 for a quote.

surfing life riley balsa surfboards

Please go to Riley planet to learn more on how we are creating the best board for an individual and the environment.

Another magazine you might be interested in reading the whole story of Riley’s Eco friendly balsa boards is in the next issue of Slide Magazine.

Story in Australia's Surfing Life magazine - Corrections

We feel that the recent story in Surfing Life magazine Issue 252 has not portrayed the whole and correct picture of Riley Balsawood Surfboards. Below are some corrections and more information on our products and our environmental actions. We were very disappointed in Morrison Media putting this together for a “Green Issue”:
• We are very actively involved in protecting the environment. You can read all about our environmental efforts by clicking here.
• The story states that we use an EPS foam core in our high performance surfboards. This is true – however, we are the only surfboard company to use 100% recycled EPS foam (which is made in Australia). This material is also used in many gardening mixes.
The story states that “one of his goals is to make a board that lasts – and that the owner looks after”. That is not one of our goals – We are already creating a product that lasts a lot longer than other boards. Our goal nowadays is to create a resin which is eco friendly.
The quote: “even if they go to the landfill they will break down” is untrue. Parts of a Riley Balsa Surfboard will break down and other parts can be recycled. But if you would throw a board away it would not break down. It is unheard of to have a Riley balsa board go to landfill - especially with a 12 month guarantee for a board. We do not know of a board ever going (this is the real benefit)
The story does not mention how light Riley Balsa surfboards are and how well they perform. Our high performance boards are just as light as a regular PU surfboard and perform just as well. The only difference is that they are much stronger, more durable, more eco-friendly, much better looking and every board is unique and Australian made.

Decide for yourself – give us a call and test ride one.

Introduction:

My name is Mark Riley and I have been shaping balsawood surfboards since 1996.

Unlike the mass produced surfboards coming in from Asia and other places, I enjoy using my own hands to create, custom build and shape balsawood surfboards.

Everyone has different requirements and the serious surfer demands his/her board built to their own individual specifications.

I strongly believe that only a shaper who is a surfer and understands the history of surfing (I have been surfing for over 30 years) can create a board that will fulfill the desires of the person who is searching for the ultimate board.

I personally oversee the selection of balsawood, the cutting, laminating and the shaping of every board that leaves the shop.

Every board is unique and of the highest quality. Most importantly my boards are entirely Australian made and are guaranteed to outlast and outperform the imported "pop outs". We use tried and tested materials to ensure a quality creation. I import my own quality balsa from South America and regularly return there to ensure the quality is of the highest standard.I have been importing this balsa for over 12 years.

All other materials and labour are 100% Australian.
Enjoy the site and see you out there…
