Recycled EPS surfboard blanks

These blanks are made from recycled EPS foam which makes a great surfboard and is more environmentally friendly. EPS foam does not share the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) or dangerous isocyanates found in Polyurethane. Because of these, Clark foam, the largest supplier of Polyurethane surfboard blanks, was shut down by California’s government due to the risks associated with the toxic chemicals used in producing Polyurethane. (They are still making this type of blank all around the world – this is your normal toxic board you are riding now)

Because this is recycled foam it is not bonded as well as virgin EPS – so it requires a veneer over it (the laminations are where the strength is). So this makes it perfect as an inner core for a surfboard. You can use an epoxy resin/glue to fix your balsa skin (or any other skin over the top). Balsa is the preferred material because it is the lightest and easiest to work with/sand compared to other woods. Resin will also stick to balsa a lot better than other woods. These blanks are made in a process called “regranulation”. Clean scrap pieces of EPS are put through regranulators and is then pumped into the shape mould and heated. Once the blanks are ejected from the mould they are shuttled into large gas oven drying rooms. They are stored in the ovens for a set period of time at a set temperature until removed and stored until required.

Please note: Hollow boards are very difficult to make without any real benefits and they need to be well maintained and they are difficult to repair, they are also very limited to your custom shape – we do solid and foam core!
